According to a new study conducted by Dutch scientists, antipsychotic substances used for the treatment of elderly patients with dementia, significantly increase the risk of pneumonia.
The study conducted at the Erasmus University Medical Center in Rotterdam involved 2000 patients. The result was that the risk of pneumonia in those who were undergoing treatment with antipsychotics, almost doubled.
A fundamentally important factor is the use of drugs of old and new type. The new ones have a lower factor of the disease, while the old ones - higher. However, one way or another the danger exists in the use of both types.
The study is published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.
