Dermatology is the branch of medicine which studies skin physiology and diseases. The word dermatology means a science about skin. Skin is the biggest and very important organ of the human body. It covers the whole bodys surface protecting internal organs from the environment. Moreover, skin is essential in regulation of bodys temperature and possesses hormonal, eliminating (excreting) and aesthetic function as well. Skin has a complex structure consisting of:

  • Water
  • Lipids
  • Proteins
  • Minerals
  • Chemicals

Skin consists of 3 layers such as:

  • The epidermis. Epidermis is the outer layer that is mainly made up of cells called keratinocytes, thus named because they produce a tough protein called keratin. Keratin makes skin waterproof and gives skin much of its resistance to physical wear and tear. Epidermis produces the pigment melanin that imparts color to the skin and contains specific Langerhans cells that protect skin from the infections.
  • The dermis is the middle layer that lies underneath the epidermis. Dermis is four times thicker that epidermis. Dermis is mainly consists of elastin and collagen, it also contains supporting tissues, oil glands, blood vessels, hair follicles and nerves.
  • The hypodermis is the inner skin layer. It lies underneath dermis. Hypodermis consists of collagen and fat cell. It also contains oil glands. Hyperdemis is necessary for regulation of temperature and protecting internal organs.
