  3. Muscle disease

Locomotor system (also called musculoskeletal system) is a complex structure, forming skeleton, giving the body form and support, providing protection of vital organs and allowing movement of the body in the external environment. The complex structure of musculoskeletal system include the following organs and tissue:

  • Bones
  • Muscles
  • Tendons
  • Ligaments
  • Joints
  • Conjunctive tissue

The bones are connected to each other and muscles through tendons, ligaments and joints. Bones provides durability and stability of the skeleton. The contraction of muscle connected to the bones provide the ability to move. Cartilages prevent the ends of the bones from rubbing directly on to each other.

Along with the primary function such as providing motion, supporting the body and protecting internal organs, locomotor system act as the main depot for such minerals as calcium and phosphorus, contains yellow and red bone marrow providing hematopoietic function.

Different diseases and disorders may affect the function and structure of the locomotor system. Different Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), traumas and injuries may affect almost all structures of the system such as bones, muscles, joints, tendons and ligaments. Majority of work-related MSDs usually develops over time and are caused by working environment or work itself. In most cases musculoskeletal disorders affect back, neck, shoulders, upper and lower extremities.
