Respiratory system

  1. Respiratory system overview
  2. Respiratory disorders
  3. Treatment of respiratory disease

Respiratory system is a set of organs providing external respiration (gas exchange between the inhaled atmospheric air and blood). Gas exchanged is realized by lungs and is aimed to absorb oxygen from the inhaled air and release to the environment in the form of carbon dioxide. The respiratory system is also involved in such important functions as thermoregulation, phonation, olfaction, humidification of inhaled air. Lung tissue plays an important role in hormone synthesis, water, salt and lipid metabolism. Extensive network of vascular system serves as a significant blood storage. The respiratory system also provides mechanical and immune protection against environmental factors.

Lungs are the main organs of respiratory system located in the thoracic cavity and are surrounded by chest muscles and bones. Atmospheric air enters the lungs through the system of tubed called airways.

Upper airways include:

  • Nasal cavity (cavum nasi)
  • Nasopharynx (pars nasalis pharyngis)
  • Oropharynx (pars oralis pharyngis)
  • Laryngopharynx (pars laryngea pharyngis)
  • Larynx (larynx)

Lower airways include:

  • Trachea
  • Bronchi
  • Bronchial tubes
  • Alveoles
