Candida induced balanitis or balanoposthitis is a rare disease. In normal conditions the skin located on the head of the penis and foreskin is unfavorable for candida infection. The fungal infection may be contracted during sexual intercourse or via self-infection with dirty hands, clothing or underwear. In view of the primary way of the disease transmission, via the sexual intercourse, it is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease or STD.
The primary factor promoting the disease development is considered to be diabetes mellitus. Occasionally balanitis and balanoposthitis induced by candida albicans, is a primary symptom of ongoing potential diabetes, that is why in cases of reoccurring disease tests for diabetes are performed. The development of the disorder may also sometimes be caused by phymosis. It is known that in circumcised men the frequency of disorder occurrence is very low.
The clinical picture, which can be seen during candida induced balanitis or balanoposthitis varies significantly. In mild case in a few hours after exposure on the penile glans and foreskin moderate hyperemia develops, accompanied by a feeling of itching and burning, which passes within a short period of time. These symptoms seem to be related to candida hypersensitivity. Sometimes small papules appear on the glans of the penis, which are later transformed into pustules with a tendency for erosion. On such erosions white incrustation may appear, which would look like yeast infection. The process may affect the scrotum and inguinal folds.
The conditions are most frequently seen in people with low hygiene.
